Default Fuel sending unit?

I have a 2000 Monte and the gas gauge isn't accurate unless there's about 1 gallon left (it's always on full). I'm guessing the fuel sending unit is bad but was wondering if I'm able to get to it without dropping the tank. I was also wondering if it would be better to just replace the fuel pump rather than replace the sending unit and have the pump fail at a later date. Thanks in advance.

there should be a access door under the trunk carpet just behind the rear seat for the sending unit. fyi they sell just the fuel level sender and its pretty cheap. saves you from buying a whole new sending unit and pump.
