it's a "non-servicable" item... because it is inside the gas tank...

Well, I did not know the location on a 06, but given what you have said, I am not sure "non-serviceable" is the answer. Someone has to be able to service the filter. I have dropped and replaced fuel filters on a couple of different vehicles with in-tank filters. It is more difficult for sure, and it may be beyond what you can or want to deal with, but certainly doable. Some models even provide for access to the tank from inside the trunk under the spare tire 'compartment.' No idea if this is one of those or not.

I didn't say it's not doable, but certainly not doable by the average owner in their garage...

it is located inside the gas tank... and the user manual for our cars specifically lists it as a "non-servicable item"... meaning, it's not something you can really do yourself (the normal/average owner)...

you would need to take it somewhere (dealer/service dept) to have it done.

and no, there's no access to our gas tank from the trunk...

I just looked on 4 different auto parts sites, and one was a dealerships site, and none of them even listed a fuel filter for our 06 monte's that you can buy over the counter...

I asked the same question to my service tech at the dealer when I was getting ready to do all my fluid/ filter changes at 50K...The tech told me that 06 and up Monte's did not have a fuel filter...He told me that it was just a screen inside the gas tank, and is not ment to be changed. (Unless of coarse you had to go in there for a fuel pump or something, then I would at least clean it). First car i've ever had like this, but oh well, I guess it works!

General: Good stuff - interesting;

06 - Understood. Since you didn't originally say "listed as a non-servicable item" I assumed you were agreeing. I agree with you, it would not be typical driver servicable item.

General: That is really odd - no fuel filter at all (never mind the screen) anywhere? Why does that even make sense? It seems every car everywhere has to deal with the potential for crap in the fuel that you don't want to make its way into your engine. What am I missing here? If I had one like that, I think I would be looking into installing a filter in-line some where.

Catalogue listings for the part are n/s (not serviceable). Although it seem crazy to me too, this has existed on many vehicles for a long time. Dodge Ram's, for example, haven't used fuel filters (in the traditional sense) for 10 years. Hardly anything has a fuel filter anymore

Your Monte has the usual fuel pump inlet filter and also has another filter on the outlet side which is inside of the fuel pump module in the fuel tank. As stated in earlier posts the fuel filter is a non serviceable item. If you feel the need to replace your fuel filter a complete fuel pump module assembly is required to accomplish this. I might add that GM fuel pump module prices are ridiculous!!!
