Engine gone?

Engine gone?
I have a 95 monte carlo with a 3.4 dohc, which I think has had it. I was driving on the highway, and had a great loss in power. The car stalled, and when I went to start it it was like the engine was seized. I let it cool down, now it starts, but with a great deal of friction and smoke coming out of the tailpipe. I first thought of a thrown rod, but I dont think it would start at all with a thrown rod. The car heats up and shuts down like its seized again as it warms.
Does anyone have any idea's? Now I'm thinking something to do with the valvetrain.

Pull the timing belt inspection cover and see if the timing belt is in tact. If it is frayed or broken that might be your problem. The inspection cover is the black "cap" beside the front valve cover. It comes off with two 8mm bolts.

if it smokes when it this all happened and it will start like it didnt have its original power. it also overheats do a leak down test sounds like a gasket a head gasket problem had to do my freinds one on his. i had him take his heads to a mechine shop on how fast he was going of the high way and how fast it got hot. the heads were fine but he got a port and polish when the heads were in the shop it runs better now then it did. do a leak down test dont drive it till you do
