crankshaft position sensor
Hello forum people. I hope you all had a merry christmas. I need some help. My 2000 monte carlo SS was haveing starting issues and would occassionally stall and be hard to restart. The only DTC was for downstream O2 sensor. A friend thought it might be the crankshaft position sensor. So, I replaced the crank sensor and the O2 sensor. It is still a little hard starting. And now it is showing a crankshaft position sensor fault code. Before it always started right up. Then, I started having to give it a lot of throttle to get it to start. I drove it a couple short trips like that until it started randomly stalling and being really hard to get it started again. Thats when I decided to replace the sensors. I was hopeing it would start right up and run great again. But, not the case. It starts but not as quick as it used to. And now it throwing the crankshaft position sensor code. Any and all help is much appreciated.

When changing the crank sensor, I believe you need to use a scan tool (like a GM Tech II) to kick off a Crank Relearn. Don't quote me on that.
Without any other DTCs it can be a bit tough to diagnose. But curious, any idea how many miles are on the current spark plugs? If you believe they are still factory original, I am going to go on a guess and suggest replacing the plugs and the plug wires. The factory plugs can last 100k-150k roughly. But there are sacrifices. And if you push them, as they age, you can run into spark related issues (it won't be a mis-fire, but the spark is too weak).
Again, just a guess. If you don't know the age of the plugs, this could be a good general maintenance item.

Thank you Maniac. I appreciate the advice. The car had 132k on it when I bought it. I did plugs and wires around 150k. And coil packs around 170k because of a misfire. Now there's around 195k on it. It was running great a couple weeks ago then it would start right up and die. So, I replaced the MAF sensor and it returned to normal for a couple days. Then it was really hard to start every time, and would sometimes stall. I will try and fine more info on the CPS relearn. Thanks again.
