Check Engine P0420 Code
Hey guys.....I feel like I have had nothing but problems lately. Sorry to keep bringing my problems here but I did some searching and I can't seem to find out what I need. My car just busted a power steering hose last night so I had no power steering on the way home from work. Well halfway home with no power steering my check engine light comes on. I thought maybe it had to do with the power steering but when I scanned the car I got the P0420 code. From what I can tell it means the cat is not "efficient". I know these cars have problems with the cats and I know GM extended the warranty but how long did they extend it? It's an 02 SS with 99,800 miles. I am sure I am out of the warranty but it doesn't hurt to ask. I am hoping it isn't the cat but knowing my luck I am sure it is. I drove the car for about a half hour after resetting the code and the CEL didn't come back on. I am hoping maybe it was a random thing and it won't come back on. It was extremely cold last night, 10 degrees. Would that effect it?

I believe the problem years for the CAT was '00 and '01. At this point, I believe it's beyond the extended warranty.
It's either a bad cat or a failing O2 sensor. I know the stock cats can last a LONG time (I have a '94 Grand Am with a 3100, 214,000 miles and factory original CAT).

Thanks for the info guys. I did some more searching and from what I found the extended warranty was 10 Years or 120,000 miles what ever comes first. I am pretty sure my car was put in use in 01 so that would make it 11 years old Maybe I will get lucky and it will be a sensor. I wonder how much it would cost to test the cat? Here is a link to the site i found the info on if anyone is interested. GM will replace Catalytic converter - Car Forums and Automotive Chat
