A code P0440 could mean one or more of the following has happened:
  • The gas cap is not installed or working properly
  • The purge solenoid has failed
  • The canister is plugged and not working properly
  • A Leak in fuel system (Fuel lines ect.)
In my car I replaced the gas cap then worked from there since that was the least expensive. Came to find out it was the purge solenoid which you have to drop the gas tank to fix. That problem is a pretty common issue with our cars. If you take it to a shop it will still be in the $200 or $300 more cause of labor. Hope that helps

I did but my main symptom was that when I went to the gas pump the auto shut off on the pump would go off when I only had like a 1/4 of a tank in there. It wasn't just one gas station either it was at every one I went to. I could still pump gas just had to do it slow and stop every once and a while to let it settle in the tank. What was causing it to do that was the solenoid not venting the tank.
