car stalls
Hi Guys,
Recently I had a remote starter installed in my 2001ss . It worked fine for a few days then started to affect the car. As I was driving down the street the car would just stall. The security light would come on and the care would not restart for a while. This never happened prior to installing the remote starter. After going back and forth with the installer I had them remove the remote starter because they couldn't fix the problem. I am still having the stall proplem. It doesn't happen all the time, maybe every three or four days.
Any idea what the problem could be. I have read through a number of posts with no luck with someone having the same problem.
Thanks for your help.
Al

Question

Please help!
I have a 2001 Monte Carlo LS, 3.8L V6, the problem I am having is that three or four times a week while driving the security light comes on. The next couple of times I try to start the car, it won't start. The security light will flash three times then the battery light then the security light and so on. I did some research and found the 'Ignition / Security Relaern Procedure'which consists of turning the key to 'on' for about 10 minutes until the 'Security' light alternates with the battery light instead of blinking three times. Although aggravating, this has always worked 1st time, until this past week. Now it takes two (2) or three(3) iterations to get the car to start. When this problem first surfaced, I took the car to the Chevy dealership where I purchaed the car...they were unable to recreate the problem and did nothing. I need a car that starts and want to take it in to be repaired, but after my last attempt I feel I better be able to help the service people with the diagnosis. Do you have any Ideas?
Thank you,
Robert
Answer
Hello Robert, This system is hard to say which componant is at fault. The most common part is the ignition lock. I have also seen problems with the connection at the ignition switch. The terminals get very loose and can cause the same thing but without a code in the security system. If there are codes then the problem would be the ignition lock cylinder part.
I also hope there isn't a add on remote start system on this car, these can cause problems too.

RE: car stalls
Hi Space,
Thanks for the response. The car has 46,000 miles on it. I have owned it for one year and not sure if the starter has been replaced. I can say that it doesnt happen all the time, just intermittantly. The ignition wiring is tight with no problems that I can visually see. I took it to a gm dealer and they found a loose wire at the bcm and thought that could be the problem. They re-crimped the wire and it happened again. Could a problem with the starter make the car stall while you are driving?
Thanks

RE: car stalls
There may be a loose connection from the wiring they tapped into under the dash. Ran into this problem on a F250 diesel.. It kept dying randomly and found that a connector was loose. The connector type was one that you "snap" onto another wire, to create a "t" connection. You can drop the panel underneath the steering wheel and start wiggling the wiring and see if the problem happens. They may not even have taken all their wiring out and the culprit could still be there. Good Luck!

RE: car stalls
I'd guess that there's a "Loose" ... (Bad crimped) ... Ignition Circuit wire that is affecting the Vehicle Security System and shutting down the Fuel Pump because the car thinks that the Ignition Circuit has been compromised.
You'll have to "Tug-Test" those splices crimped-together by the Remote Installer.
Additionally, you should look for that bad wiring splice right away. If the car thinks that its wiring has been altered in a fashion that closely resembles an attempt to "Hot Wire" the Ignition ... the Vehicle Immobilizer Circuit will be activated and you aren't going to be able to start the Car without having it towed to a Dealership and having the Immobilizer reset by them.
