Default Car sounds like it has a 2step?

Working on a friends 3.8L 2000 and it won't rev above 4K rpm sounds like its on a 2 step. On the road or in neutral no difference.

Car has 200K on it and little to no matience, and as far as I know its been like this for 10-20K miles.

There a common cause for this?

Car does have a CEL on but until I fix the cooling system problem in my other thread I can't bring it anywhere to get codes read.

It will do it in neutral/park or on the road while driving. This sounds like an ignition miss and being the CEL is flashing confirms its missing.

So I have removed the upper intake and check it out, replaced gaskets and cleaked out EGR, replaced wires and plugs, removed and cleans the coils and module under them.

Than I cleared the codes and the car still does the same thing @ about 4K it just hits a wall and wont rev any higher, while driving or in neutral/park. No codes have returned.

Ideas?

If your friend wants to fix this problem, this is the BEST way to fix it. (plus other issues)

he would want the 2.5" bolt-in downpipe with high-flow cat + gaskets. (preferably 305 stainless, but that's extra $$)

1st I'll unbolt the exhaust and see if it helps. I'll report back.
