Default Brake light issue

Hello all I am new to this forum and is my first post. I have an 82 monte carlo 3.8lV6. I just got the car and the brake lights do not work. When I turn the headlights on the rear lamps also turn on(dimmer than brake lights), but when I press the brake pedal it does not brighten up. i replaced the brake lights and brake switch and checked the fuses. What else should I be looking for? Any help is appreciated.

any loose/disconnected wiring from the brake pedal switch to the tail light itself?

You might want to start using a test light and test at the pedal and work your way back towards the lights. Also, check the power to the bulbs, sometimes the contacts can get corroded.

If the tail lights go dark when you step on the pedal I'd say definately look for a bad ground.
