ok i have now thaat i have replaced the trans on to the next problem. i have blue smoke comin out the tail pipe in the morning and sometimes middle of the day depending on how long Saidy (my 86 monte) has been sitting. im think its the rings possible valves. do u guys have any other 411 to offer. im also in the market of gettin a 350 block, should i fix my engine or save up for the block ?

 

black smoke-running rich
blue smoke- oil in combustion chamber
white smoke- coolant in combustion chamber. common to see white smoke on cold start up though.

id say its possible. valve stem wear possibly or rings

if yours inst bad you could just rebuild yours.

 

If its puffing blue out in the mornings when you first start it up, I would say the umbrella seals on the valves need replaced. To replace them, the valve springs have to be removed. The seal slides over the valve stem and seals the valve guide.

It can be done with the heads in the car. You will need an air compressor and an adapter for the spark plug hole. The compressed air holds the valves up while you change the seal. The repair is not that expensive, under $100.00 with buying the air compressor adapter.

It should hold you until your get the money saved up to rebuild a 350. Might I suggest going 383 stoker(350block, 400 crank & rods). Its not that much more.

 

found a crate motor from gm 350/290 and my guys there said i could get it for 2125. so thats my focus now. i should just stroke that one out is what you are suggesting Seawolf ?

 

Depends on what your horse power goal is. If you want something to just drive to the store and back, a crate motor will work fine. If you want some performance, then I would suggest building one to your specs.

If you want to build one, I would do it myself. There are several good books out there that tell you how to rebuild a chevy small block, if you have never done it before. Its not hard at all. Just have to take your time, and pay attention to the details. Plus its a great learning experience.

 

well i have built a motor before but im lookin yeah to drive around town but if i need to kill some bs import then i want to smash them. i just really need to figure out the best manifold cam n heads will produce the most power . i dont want to use nos or turbo though

 

i personally think that the crate motor is the way to go nowadays. you can get them for fairly cheap with quality parts. you might want to shop around. car craft just did an article on a bb crate that was 2600 ballpark range and produced good power while still being extremely tame.
