Default Airbag light

1998 Monte Carlo LS - intermittent airbag light. Don't want to pay the dealer $100 just to hook up a scanner and tell me it needs an $800 part, which is like 50% value of car.

What are my options besides just leaving it? Is there any way to determine what's wrong using another type of scanner or diagnostic tool? I have an OBD2 scanner, but that doesn't read airbag codes. And I can't afford a $2000 techII. Any other way to do it?

Default RE: Airbag light

Pull out the lamp in the dash that lights up the airbag display would be the cheapest. Right next to it would be pulling the fuse, but that would make the system non functional.
