Default 96 Monte Won't go in Reverse

My brother was driving his 96 V6 Monte today when he said he started hearing a ticking/grinding noise from the engine/transmission.
He pulled the car into his driveway opened the hood and he could hear noise coming from the engine around the firewall.
When he got under the car the noise was louder and later he determined the noise was coming from the transmission housing.

Here's what I can explain about the problem:
- The noise comes from the transmission housing and is barely audible at idle (1,000rpm)
- If you rev the car up to 1,500rpm the noise gets very loud, it sounds like rocks are rolling around in the transmission (a fast ticking or knocking sound)
- The transmission will not shift into reverse, it seems like its still in neutral, but it will go into forward
- Transmission fluid is topped-up

Any ideas what the problem is or could be?
I'll try to have more details tomorrow (such as which engine is in the car, all I know now is that the car has a V6 with an automatic).

- Jim

I'd be willing to bet it needs a transmission

It sounds like a gear is stripped. How does first gear work for you? Any problems? Sluggish when first taking off? I'm sure in either case you are going to need to pull the transmission and either have it rebuilt or get a used one. The 5th gen's were known to have a weak transmission in them.

stripped gear....most likely caused by puttin the car into reveres while going forward... ive seen many honda at my job like that cuz people try to be like the stunt drivers in movies and turn the car 180 pop it into reverse and the turn another 180 and put it into drive...not many people have succes with it..pull the trnas and rebuild it...do it yourself if ur good with ur hands....
