Default 2004 monte carlo rpm jumping and stalling

Hi everyone so my car had been acting weird for about 2 months when i have my car stopped or in park, once my car warms up the rpm's will idle at around 700 but it will drop to about 400 then it will jump up to about 1,200 and lately it's been stalling more and more. When I'm driving it will do it randomly and it will feel like a giant thud but then it's fine for a little while but then it will do it again and I've tried cleaning the mass air flow senser and nothing. PLEASE HELP

1st,
How's the fuel pressure at the fuel rail?
Could be a failing fuel pump issue.
Whens the last time it had the fuel filter replaced?
Is it full of oil? when was the last time it had an oil change?

Have you tried un pluging the MAF and see if it runs better and or doesn't stall out? If the runability is better... I would replace the MAF... Is the Maf an AC Delco? If it isn't That could also be the problem. Its highly recommended to use only ACDelco products when it comes to MAF replacement as any other brands cause such problems your experiencing!

Hope this helps as I'm sure others will chime in with more answers to resolve this issue.

Your quite welcome!
How long have you owned this Monte?
Did it come with any maintenance records? Usually that's a good indicator of how your Monte has been taken care of...
Keep us posted of your progress Tks!

I had the same problem twice. The first time it was due to a non AC/DELCO MAF. Once I discovered that was the problem I put the old one back in. 4 months later the old one became highly sensitive to Heat in the cold. When the engine reached N.O.T. The engine would shut off and would not start again until the engine temp went down below N.O.T..
This happened on the 20 mile trip home and as a Blizzard started. I put in a new MAF, and I haven't had this problem in a year.

Wow I'm having the same issue too I mean mine is highly modded and I'm running a fairly big cam and currently with my stock converter it has to idle at 1100 warm otherwise it will shut off but It does go down to like 750 and rev up to 1500 sometimes and especially when it's cold. The lights dim and sometimes it shuts off. When I slow down to lights it drops down to 750is and hesitates than when I completely stop it revs itself back on. I'm pretty sure I need a better converter and maybe a voltage booster. Also when I'm just cruising sometimes I feel the car somewhat hesitating maybe because the converter is trying to pull the Rpms down. But anyway I'm in the same boat as you

MAF is Mass Air Flow sensor. As for the cost, call the local parts store. Good luck.
