The '00 and '01 Montes got a bad batch of Catalytic Converters from GM's supplier, so bad GM extended the warranty (but I think the extended CAT warranty is expired now).

Knowing that, if you still have the factory CAT, might be worth having that checked out.

I agree with The_Maniac, most likely that catalytic converter(s). How many miles are on it? I had a Chevy Astro van with a 4.3 v6 some time back, and it did the same thing. Replaced the catalytic converter, and it was great after that.

One thing you can try is, take out the O2 sensor before the catalytic converter, and it will let the exhaust out of that hole. Try to drive it down the block like that and see if it dies. It should pin-point your problem. Just in case its not the cat, it will same you some time and money (and aggravation!) GOOD LUCK!

My car WAS doing the same thing. I replaced the Fuel Filter with no progress, then (I listed to all the MEMBERS at the MCF and had the CATALYTIC converter replaced, RUNS like new... So you can use this as a gauge... They were all right, so....

I'm going out on a limb here and since it happened instantly and not over time, I am betting it's a vacuum leak.

MAF or IAC.

Mine had symptoms like yours and it was the MAF.

Yeah could be MAF as well. But generally a stock speed density tune would keep it alive. Plus the check engine light would go off.

I am willing to bet it's a vacuum leak as well. My 96' Grand Am SE would do the exact same thing his is doing. Was a pin size hole in the vacuum. cut the end off and reattached the line and it worked perfectly.
