Default 1986 monte carlo ss tranny problem

hello all i just purchased a 86 monte carlo ss and am working slowly at restoring it. First off i would like to say that i dont know alot about cars but have always loved montes so i bought this car kinda as a learning project. The car runs and i have drove it but i noticed that the tranny was not shifting out of 1st so i have to manually shift it. I am pretty sure that the tranny is a 200-4r. Has anyone else had this happen to them before

The 200r4 that you have generally is a good transmission. Many guys over on the corvette forum put them into their heavy HP C3's. I would first check the cable that runs from your carb down to the transmission. I believe it is called the TV cable. It is adjustable. If I remember correctly have someone hold the acclerator cable to the floor and there should be a button to push of the cable behind the mounting bracket
