Wireless Internet In Your Car? Has The World (Wide Web) Gone Mad?[:@]?
[:-]
We warmed up to the idea of “twd” (texting while driving). We thought navigation systems werecool—and helpful in a pinch. When it came to iDrive, we cringed at first, but as the years passed we got used to it (actually, we’re still cringing). Now, a company out of California, Autonet, promises to make your car a mobile hot spot.
Autonet uses the nationwide cellular data networks to provide customers with a Wi-Fi service that can reach up to 100 feet outside of their vehicles. With speeds up to 800 kilobits per second, the service rivals many in-home setups, allowing Internet access on the go.
Available only as an aftermarket add-on, the router costs $399, and monthly service is $49.95. Simply plug in to your cigarette lighter and go. Also included is a conventional wall adapter so you can use the service anywhere you go that has cellular coverage.
For the relatively low cost of entry you’ll soon be able to check your e-mail, talk on your Crackberry, input your next destination, and make sure that your vibrating seats are on the “fast and vigorous” setting. We can’t wait to see what technology makes its way into the car next. We’re just waiting for the day that your car will be able to park itself. Oh, wait…

Pimp My Honk? New Device Plays Back Sound Files Through Car Horns

Mark our words: it won’t be long until we’re waxing nostalgic about the days when custom car horns weren’t able to muster more than a simple “La Cucaracha” or General Lee-aping “Dixie.”
How’s that? A company called Horntones is coming out with a $150 device called the FX-550 that loops into a car’s regular horn system, allowing drivers to play a standard audio file when the horn is pressed. The device loads sounds from a USB flash drive, and can hold eight different “honks” at a given time.
That means drivers will soon be able to blare a few bars of Sammy Hagar’s “I Can’t Drive 55” to left-lane dawdlers, or Bob Seger’s “Like A Rock” at the worksite from their Chevy trucks.
Joy.

Bowers & Wilkins Designs Ambitious Audio System for Jaguar C-XF

Editor’s Note: The audiophiles over at our sister publication, The Absolute Sound, were quite taken with Jaguar’s C-XF concept, though perhaps for different reasons than a typical WINDING ROAD reader. They were fixated upon the Detroit show star because of the concept’s high-end Bowers and Wilkins (B&W) audio system, about which they filed this report:
We learned at press time that Jaguar has chosen Bowers & Wilkins (B&W) to create an advanced automotive audio system for Jaguar’s C-XF concept car, unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show in early January. This alliance suggests that Bowers & Wilkins will supply premium audio systems in Jaguar production vehicles. This move is a logical step in the trend of audio companies developing branded, premium audio systems for luxury cars (Lexus and Mark Levinson, Aston Martin and Linn, Audi and Bang & Olufson, and Mercedes and Harman-Kardon). That internet thing is pretty cool if you a laptop type of person i guess or you want internet anywhereyou go, outside of your carBut as for my carPC i would just pay the same monthy money for the verzion anywhere service. It plugs right into your computer and you can get high speed internet anywhere in any major or semi-major metro area. I hear great things about it in Philly and im sure its just as good in any other big city.
