Default Transmission gear selector broken?

Ok this is one of if not the biggest issue I have found with my newly aquired 1987 Monte LS. The column shifter does not seem to be attached to the orange gear selector "arrow" in the dash, so I cannot tell what gear I am in. The arrow will jump slightly when shifting, but never gets out of the park position. Also the shifting through gears feels pretty loose/sensitive. Like I have to be careful when shifting as not to overshoot the gear I want...hope that makes sense. Where do I start in fixing this problem? I assume there is some sort of cable running from the steering column to the dash. Are these symptoms of 2 different issues, or are they related by some linkage? Any help would be great, because this is annoying!
