Just chiming in with my own ideas and questions...

Couldn't this whole thing be fixed with a simple toggle switch installed on the remote lead and placed somewhere near the drivers' seat so that the driver could turn the amp on or off whenever he desired? I.E. switch on after the radio/car was on or switch off before turning off the radio while driving?

If one chose to not do it this way, what are the consequences of the "thump" or having the amp on without signal in general?

BBEngineering, where exactly would one find this pink wire that you recommend on a 2000 Monte Carlo SS WITHOUT a factory amp?

If an issue arises, sure. I dunno man, its possible but I wouldnt bet on it. I have never had any consequences by having the amp on/deck off so I dont think there are any. The amp is under far more stress when its doing its job than it ever will be when powered up but not getting any signal, seems more of a "if you're not using it then it shouldnt be on" issue more than anything. Some of us are that **** about things, others not so much, its all personal preference.

The pink wire is coming out of one of the plugs that go into the factory deck.

 

The wire is white on the 00-05 Monte/Impala. Here's the diagram. It's pin B3 on the 24 pin connector behind the radio



As far as being '****', I would consider it thorough rather than sloppy... you have the option in these cars to do it the right way, so going to the fuse box is lazy IMO

Also note, that transients (like at turn-on) can be as hard on an amp as when it's actually amplifying

I also wanted to state for the thump problem I was having. under further review I believe its doing it when it turns off. I mean my amps turn on about 2 sec after the HU starts up. But in the issue I stated above the HU kicks off for like a second or 2 which I think somehow thats whats causing it. Not wiring error etc..

 

The **** comment wasnt directed at anyone in particular, jst a general statement. But again, I agree with you, using the remote lead off the deck is the best way to go. I never took the time to figure out what wire was the remote turn on so I never knew which one it was. The fact that my solution has given me no issues the 20+yrs i've been installing systems did not necessitate that I needed to find a better way, if it aint broke.........

That being said, the next time I do an install on one of these cars and keep the factory deck I will def use the wires you pointed out are the remote turn on, thanks for the helpful info there.

 

For the record, I love threads like this where explanations are given, not just the answer and then someone picks up his ball and goes home when asked to explain why/how. Bbengineer I have nothing but respect for you and appreciate you teaching me what I didnt already know, that the white wire coming out of the plug on the 00-05 mc's is the remote turn on and the pink wire on the 06-07 is the remote. Knowledge, gotta love it!

 

I too am always looking to learn more and am always willing to share my knowledge and experience (with people who are actually open minded and wanting to learn)

To be honest, I haven't done an install in years, but the thankfully, Ohms law and electricity haven't changed much so I'm still covered!

Wouldn't you have to pull the dash in order to get to the wiring harness behind the factory stereo? Or where else are you finding this white wire on the 2000 Monte? I assume you have to splice into the wire (preferably with a splice connector?) to do so? I am in the middle of an install on my Monte...
