RCA vs Speaker wires

RCA vs Speaker wires
Would it be alright to run RCA's for the signal input vs connecting the speaker wires?
It would make sense that you would that you would only need RCA's.
It would be like running a component set and and HDMI both carry the signal but only one is needed.
Can someone help clarify.
