ok, I finally got to bring the car into the garage to fix the lower transmission quick connection that has been staining my driveway. so I replaced it and started to tackle the job every one has been asking. taking my time, it took me a little over an hour to swap everything out and make the perfect ground for the wire. After checking and rechecking my work I turned on the ignition switch and nothing was smoking or burning up so everything was a go. I started the car and nothing happened with the oil gauge. it did not move. so I will chalk this up to experience and maybe when I get some more time and splurge money I will buy a new sending unit and try again. I was hoping it would have peg backwards, then I would have realized that it was wired backwards. but nothing. but at least I tried.

ok, after doing more research and with the help of Maniac, I have found out that what I thought was the oil sending unit was the anit-knock sensor. I thought it was the sending unit because it was located above the oil filter. guess I should have looked the part up on AutoZone . so I guess I will be going back and reinstalling the anit-knock sensor. but, after I looked on Auto Zone, both engines take a 2 prong sending unit. so I do not know why the oil pressure will not work.

Autozone may be showing you a generic pic for both types of oil units. Or maybe the units are both the same, it's the wiring for the connector that's different (the ground makes the difference. That info is beyond me.....
I'm just hoping take #2 works

thanks for the help Maniac, I am not giving up on this. as soon as I get some slush money I will buy a new 3.8 sending unit and try it again. I do know this, that anti-knock sensor works , when I started the car yesterday to pull the car back in the garage, the car bucked, rocked, rough idled liked crazy. the check engine light came on and everything. but after putting it ack in and disconnecting the battery to reset the computer, everything is back to normal. but I will try it again. this has me stumped right now bit I will figure it out!!! with the help of you and everybody else out there!

Default oil pres. gauge

did any of the 4th gens. have a 80lb. oil pres. gauge. they list 3 sending units for it. one for lite, one for 60lb. and one for 80lb. and the thing i don't understand is the 80lb. is $12. cheaper than the 60lb. i've never seen one but i'm new to this chevy stuff. my new crate eng. keeps the oil pre. gauge pegged all the time. my bro says to just put in a man. gauge. but i want to keep it stock looking inside.

as from what I have found out and what all I have done, it seems to be a tuff item too tackle. I have tried what I thought would work but I truly believe that you would have to have the harness and the computer from an SS. I do know when I plugged a scan tool into the Monte, I kept getting the same fault "no oil pressure reading" and I have given up on trying to make it work. and I am sad to say that I will never know what will make it work. The Monte took a turn for the worst and was going to cost me a small fortune to fix her. with the mileage that she had I knew it was going to be a lot of money. so I went and traded her in on another car. I will be taking pictures of all the parts I have and will be getting rid of. I want to say thanks to this website and the great knowledge that this board has. but it is just missing one thing that we all need in keeping our cars going. a link that gives out wheelbarrow's full of hundred dollar bills . again, thank you all for the help and information that you have given me. it was fun while it lasted.

I recently stumbled upon a really involved link of info claiming a method to make the oil pressure gauge work:
Impala HQ - Your source for information on the 2000-2002 Chevrolet Impala

I suspect it does not work due to programming in the PCM (a setting that PCM tuning companies don't bother de-coding if you will because there is little market to bother with it). I began wondering if you took a Monte SS software file and made all the changes to run a 3400 powered Monte, might it actually allow the oil gauge to work (the theory being that the "hidden" setting would be properly configured). But, it requires vesting way too much time and effort to pull that off.

@MidNight Rider - Sorry to hear you and your Monte parted ways. But, there comes a time to cut some losses and move on. Thanks for being part of the Monte Carlo group here and you are always welcome here regardless of Monte ownership!
