Default 2004 Volume Controls

I have a 2004 Monte. Question is, if I ever change the factory stereo for an aftermarket one can you retain the steering wheel controls to work with the new unit. Just happen to think of this the other day, it's the first car that i have ever had with this option and would hate to loose it if the factory one stops working.

Yes, you have to buy a module to retain the controls.

Is it a pigtail that plugs into the factory harness, can I get it from a retail store or dealer?

Thanks, good info. I looked at a couple of grand prix with the steering wheel controls with aftermarket stereos, but just did a quick walk around and didn't drive or sit in them and do the once over. After I bought the Monte it got me to think about if I had to replace the factory unit with a new one and having the controls still work.
