6th Gen ('00-'05): 01 head unit change
Hey guys i'm thinking about upgrading my head unit in my 01 Monte. I was thinking about one with DVD and Bluetooth. What I'm not sure of is my oil life reset, door chime and exit lighting settings done through the factory unit. I also want to keep my steering controls. What will I need to get along with the deck to hook this up?
Thanks
Thanks
Warning lights? Yes. I think there are ways to reset them without the head unit in place; check your owners manual.
What you'll lost is the warning chimes. All warning sounds are generated by the head unit.
I've used two approaches to these issues. In my daughters 01 Monte, I removed the head unit and installed a Pioneer stereo with a kit to replace the chimes. You can get these through Crutchfield.com, or if you know what you need, through Amazon. She didn't have steering wheel controls, so I just got a Pioneer steering wheel mounted remote.
On my Monte, I installed a Pioneer touch screen system. There are a couple of adapters to make the steering wheel controls work with most stereos. I used a
Metra Axxess ASWC-1 Universal steering wheel control adapter. Got it though Amazon.
As far as the chimes, I added a speaker and made extension wires to put the stock head unit in the trunk. I still get access to all of the setup functions, and still get the standard chimes.
