GM uses the same coils on the 3100, 3400 and 3800 L36 (non-supercharged motor). If you look, all L67 coils should have a blue connector on the bottom and I believe share the same part number.

BUT, in the Series II L67 (supercharged 3800), GM uses a coil with a different part number and a blue connector. But this is only on the Series II (not Series I) supercharged 3800.

It's impact is limited. It helps improve your throttle response. These coils sit on your factory ICM (Ignition Control Module). The L36 and L67 use the same ICM and the 3100/3400 use a different ICM from the 3800s. You don't need to change the ICM or the wires (factory wires on these cars are pretty decent).

I like them so much, all my GM v6 cars have them (my 3400 Grand Am, the wife's 3400 Impala and my 3800 L36 Monte). Admittedly, I did not notice them so much when I put them on, but my Grand Am L67 coils started on my '94 Grand Am with a 3100. I moved them to the new Grand Am to prep the '94 for sale. I HATED how the car performed when I put it back to stock!!! That's when it felt different. I felt like I lost some "giddy up" and it just did not have the "pep" it used to when getting on the freeway or passing other cars.

Some people argue there is no change and I'm guessing odds are never tried this mod (they see stock coils and assume they look the same, they must be the same). Or because people who do 3800 "top swaps" typically don't change the coils don't have issues, so again this must be a "false mod". I'm telling you, I know from experience on 4 different cars total, they are not the same and they work and yield a touch of improvement. I've put a lot of miles on these cars I put these L67 coils in and no issues. The '94 Grand Am had 215,000 miles (I want to say I put the coils on when it had 190,000), no issues.

My opinion, try to score a set of L67 coils for about $30-$50 for the set (shipping and all). Beyond that, I don't think the mod is worth a ballooned cost. Don't be afraid of junk yard coils. Two of my sets were clean yard pulls. Just make sure they have the blue plugs on the bottom as a quick check that you are getting the right ones. The L67 and non-L67 coils rarely fail.

ill probably just go to the local parts store and pick some up this weekend.. so the ~$30 offbrand ignition coils are all i need? they have a bunch of different kinds at a lot of different prices.. just wondering if the "name-brand" products higher price is justified or if youre just paying for the name on these. (acdelco, msd, etc)

also in your last post you specified that l36 coils have blue on the bottom.. andr then specified to double check the l67 has blue on the bottom. typo?

thanks for all the help, i really appreciate it. some pretty basic stuff but you gotta start somewhere i guess!

L67 coils have blue plugs on the bottom. Don't get after market coils. First, I find those don't stand up as well as OEM. Plus, some catalogs of aftermarket coils don't differentiate between L67 vs L36 coils. Get real OEM L67 coils. Again, used coils are not an issue (all 3 of my cars have salvage L67 coils).

When I bought my 2000 LS, the exhaust was already done. I like the L67 coil pack idea. That and a cold air intake I think would be great. Not sure what the gains would be.

you may want to call ZZP and ask them if they can still get you a DP, when i had my LS i couldnt findit on their site but i remembered seing one in the past... i just called them and they made one for me (said it would just take a bit longer to get out the door but that they kept the "jig" for it so it wouldnt be an issue)

Also i had a purchased a "tuned" comp. from Overkill, pretty happy with that!
