97 z34 exhaust

RE: 97 z34 exhaust
So what would be the best size pipe to go with. If I dont buy a kit, I will have a shop bend the pipe and Ill weld it up myself. The pipe size before the cat is 2.5" right? So if I buy a 2.5" in/out high flow cat and go 2.5" back until it splits to duals and go 2.25" would that be an ideal size? Also, if I put an exhaust on, would just putting a drop in K&N airfilter in the airbox let the engine breath enough on the intake side?

Oh, if you have the $'s, I would go with a CAI,
but a drop in filter, does improve breathing.
Good Luck,

OK here is the best recomendation for an exhaust system for the car:
first off, unless your Cat is bad leave it. when i pulled my stock cat it was still good. and it had over 150,000 miles on it. it also had the same straight thru design as all the High flow cats out there. my recomendation is leave the stock cat there that way your rear O2 sensor will still work and you wont have to buy an O2 simulator or have to have the computer programed to remove that code....
Now for the system. i perfer to use a single straight thru muffler under the car and then split the exhaust at the rear for the tail pipes, the benifits of this are: cheeper cause you only need 1 muffler vs two, lighter weight, old school look of the straight pipes at the back of the car.
2.5" is the correct size to go with. the add ons all depend on how much sound you want... if you want it to be Loud, then just go with a single magnaflow or borla type muffler 14" long body and then run the rest of the system....
for a more livable system (like i have) i have the 14" magnaflow, and a glass pack after that. it splits to a pair of S&S tips at the tail.
magnaflow also makes a few other mufflers that will work. the longer the muffler the quieter it will be.
here is a pic of the systems i have run and had planed for my GTP... the only issue to runing the exhaust alonge the drv side is that the fuel lines run there! hot exhaust and fuel are not good buddies!!!!
also if your going to weld the sytem your self go on to jegs or summit racing and buy some mandral bends. and the tubing... mandral bends will flow much better then the crimp bends of any shop. from the pic you can tell you will need atleast5-90* bends 1 Y and prob a random 180 or 270 to cut to make the turns for the pipe to go around the gas tank and spare tire well... hope the pic helps your planing...
-------------------------
as for the intake, if you havent bought the K&N drop in, dont! it is a lot of money for very little gain. go for a home built FWI (fender well intake) i have links and writeups on how to make one of these on my cardomain website in my profile. you can build a very nice FWI for under $50... the drop in's are about that price! the FWI is one of the best bang's for your buck.
