no matter what you do or put on the 3800 it will have rasp and not sound "v8 good"

the best ive heard is a cammed turbo car with the cutout on the dp open. its loud but sounds mean and you can really hear the turbo spooling etc.

aside from that ill take a gen v sc car with 1.9 rockers, intercooled, 3.0 pulley, headers, stock mufflers. its quiet and you hear nothing but the insane wine from the sc.

bottom line IMO unless you have a turbo car keep the exhaust quiet because it will never sound good. at idle it will sound mean but as soon as you get to around 2,000rpm and up forget it (unless you have the turbo to turn the rasp into spool noise) because its nothing but rasp no matter what exhaust combination you run.

As stated earlier and said many times. I don’t think it’s raspy. To each his own. One thing you did hit on though. I took off the shroud/cover and went to a CAI. I LOVE the sound of the SC. I can actually hear it over the exhaust.

Nothing will ever sound like a V8 except a V8. But then again. A V8 does not sound like a V12<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com<img src=" /><o:p></o:p>

I'm thinking of glasspack to 2.5" piping and maybe a muff delete. How do you think it will sound and any suggestions.

Get rid of the resonator only if cabin noise doesn’t bothers you. I still have my resonator on and straight pipe after the Catalytic converter. I love it. Sounds good. Not raspy as some will attest to. Although there cars are not set up that way. Personally. Drop the mufflers. If that’s not enough for you, then straight pipe the resonator. If that’s not enough. Glass pack the resonator. OR. Just glass packs the resonator. Just as hint though. The glass pack will loose all its effectiveness in some what of a short time. Then you have straight pipe. Just my thoughts.<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o:p></o:p>

Still not sure but my car is not as loud as i thought it would be wit the new 3 inch piping and headers.
If the volume change is what you are after- then it isn't as loud as you thought because you haven't touched the piece of the exhaust whose primary responsibility is the reduce the volume output- the muffler. If you want it louder- change the muffler. Sure doing headers, removing a cat, and changing pipe size will affect the tone and to some small extent the volume- but the primary piece of the system tasked with controlling volume is the muffler.

The best sound I have found on any 3800 is Headers to no cat, a glasspack in place of the resonator and stock mufflers.
I used to run a front PLOG, 3" DP w/ cat delete, and a deleted resonator with stock mufflers on my 99 gtp- I thought it sounded pretty good without being too loud...

I go straight pipe. Great sound. I'm deleting the resonator and most likely the U-bend in my 04 SS SC. I don't have headers and I really don't think I need them.
I'll be honest- that's kinda ricey sounding: Start by doing the mods that make the car as loud as you can, with the least power gain- and then not even do the part that can actually add power (headers)? I guess everyone has their own priorities.

I'd think if the goal was just to make it as loud as you could- you'd be better off just welding in an electric cutout at the front of the downpipe to bypass all of the exhaust system.

I along with MANY MANY others really like the sound of straight pipes. If you can’t handle the noise, get out of the men’s room. I love it loud. My 69 Chevelle was very loud. I loved it then too.
I don't think that's really the right way to look at it- that someone isn't manly enough if they don't like stupid loud straight pipe. Some people just don't like having a screaming loud car that only runs 15s in the 1/4.

I'm all for doing straight pipe on a heavily built engine (in whatever type of car) where you have a legitimate concern about exhaust restriction- but for a basic bolt on monte carlo- you're not really adding any power, just making the car significantly louder.

I'll be honest- I cut the muffler off of my monte and welded in a glasspack when I was in high school (back when it had a 160hp 3100), but I realized after getting beaten by a few various stock exhaust cars (mustang, cadlillac, even a pickup truck) that it just wasn't as cool as I had originally thought- driving around in a screaming loud 16 second car.

Now that I'm a little older, and have my own house- it kinda irritates me when some of the neighbors are ripping through the neighborhood in their straight piped cars. We have a guy a couple houses down with a straight piped Escalade- that sure is irritating at 4AM when he's got it out there idling 10 minutes before work, and when he goes ripping down the street NASCAR style....

Your way off on the raspy sound. No rice here. I’ll stick with my straight pipes.
I don't think that's a fair assessment, I just think you have a different definition of what exhaust 'rasp' sounds like than what the majority of the 3800 community calls rasp. Whatever that off-beat sound is from say 2kRPM up under load with a straight piped 3800 is what is typically referred to as 'rasp'. Regardless what you happen to call it, that is the noise people are referring to when they talk about a 'raspy' sounding 3800.
