Default 1998 Catalatyic Converter Question

Hey all,

I recently bought a 1998 Monte with the 3.1 Runs great awesome car. however it has a check engine light on beacuse the Cat is no longer any good. I dont have the money for a direct fit, so i was thinking on getting a universal from magna flow from the Jegs book. I was gonna cut and weld that in. Will this work??? any ideas on what size that exhaust pipe is?? Thanks in advance everyone.

i believe the stock piping is 2.25, so a 2.5 would work if thats all it comes in

Did you get the cat installed yet? I have a few questions if you have or for those who are using a magnaflow universal catalytic converter.
How does it perform and how does it sound? Any sound defference from stock?

I switched to a Magnaflow Cat recently as part of the ZZP downpipe. Noticeable performance increase, especially going up hills. But I can't really say whether it's the better Cat, the 'U-bend' delete, or because my old Cat was dying and dragging down performance.

No change in exhaust note. Need to make changes to stock resonator / mufflers for that. That's next on my list...
