My mom is looking into a 2000 SS with 170k for my younger sister. We are wondering what are the typical issues that would have happened by now if any. things like the gasket going out as was typical in 90s GMs due to the Dexcol. Or the alternator going out as was also typical before 100k in those cars. I can only speak of the experience of my SC '05, which I think is just too different and only has half those miles on it, so I'm not much help to her.

170k is a lot of miles and we want to know what issue we will most likely face if they haven't already occurred. Its a 1 owner, so I think that is a good sign (or is it a bad one b/c they didn't have any problems and we are about to get them all?)

Transmission, Valve cover gaskets, LIM gasket, UIM gasket, Catalytic Converter, rusted out resonator all come to mind.

 

x2 i would feel around the valve covers to see if there is a leak before starting the car do to dress up to see if there are hiding that. then check the colent when it is running to see if there is going to over flow or colent lose or have it pressure checked befor buying it. to make sure nothing is wrong then almost final check the trans fluid and service record if they didnt totch it for the life of it well expect it to die really fast i mean fast do to different driving styles. last if it seems like it wants to die or feels like some thing holding it back it is the cat. last check the back muffler.
