I have a 1996 Monte Z 34 that will not shift out of first gear. Any thoughts before I rip the tranny out and replace it.

 

it's broken....

i think when these transmissions break, you get 1st and 3rd, or 2nd and 4th. without second, you can't get to 3rd.. so maybe if you wind it all the way out and let off you culd get 3rd? i'm not good with transmissions but that definitly means it needs rebuilt i think.

 

a gm tech scanner could tell you if your computer is telling your transmission to shift or not. if it is telling it to shift then it's mechanical and it's bad news..

 

I had an old Buick that lost 3rd and Reverse...lol...Umm if it isn't shifting, I'd say you may need a rebuild.
