Years back, mid 90's, I called a Chevy dealer looking for parts (don't remember exactly what anymore...) for an 88 Chevy Corsica. Parts guy asked if it was a 4 door or 2 door??? At a Chevy dealer ?!?!?! So at least as chibiblacksheep said he had the right make and wasn't a dealer.

I haven't had anyone ask about the '06 Monte but I have the '86. But it's debadged so I guess they do have a valid point.
I've heard, "Nice Pontiac." or Olds, or Buick from people.
Come to think of it a woman at work called the Pace car a Pontiac one night.

See what happens when you de-badge your car!
It could have been worse. He could have called it a 1990's Thunderbird.
I can't help but see the irony in all this. I don't want to start anything. But for years 5th gen owners were getting their Monte's called Luminas. Even though it clearly reads "MONTE CARLO" on the sides and back of the car.
Maybe that's what the problem was with the Monte Carlo from the 80's to 2007. They look too much like other GM cars.
