Monte Carlo is among largest of coupes on the market
2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo
Associated press Review

So the 2006 Chevrolet Monte Carlo at dealerships is front-wheel drive, not rear-wheel drive like the Monte Carlo that NASCAR driver Jeff Gordon races in Nextel Cup every weekend.

And the Monte Carlo in showrooms includes seats for five, while Gordon and fellow race car driver Dale Earnhardt Jr. have only driver's seats in their racetrack-ready Monte Carlos.

Still, buyers of the 2006 production Monte Carlo - especially the top-of-the-line SS model with small-block V-8 - can feel a subtle link between their cars and the race-winning National Association of Stock Car Auto Racing Monte Carlos.

Inside, the 2006 Monte Carlo retains the old-school feel of a two-door coupe that's larger than most other coupes offered today. Outside, there's a silhouette that's vaguely reminiscent of a NASCAR Nextel Cup vehicle.

Most of all, under the hood this year, Chevrolet replaced the top engine - a 240-horsepower, supercharged V-6 in the 2005 Monte Carlo SS - with a much more potent, 303-horsepower, small block V-8 that delivers 323 foot-pounds of torque at 4,400 rpm.

While this isn't anywhere near the 700-plus horsepower and more than 500 foot-pounds of torque at 7,000 or so rpm in today's Nextel Cup vehicles, it's a much-needed improvement.

Now, everyday drivers can feel strong, sustained acceleration in their Monte Carlos if they want to mimic a racer, just a little.

Starting manufacturer's suggested retail price, including destination charge, is $20,990 for the base Monte Carlo LS with a 211-horsepower V-6. There's a second hotV-6 available -a 242-horsepower, 3.9-liter unit, less thena secondslower to sixty mph and quarter/mile timesthen the V-8 SS. It's apotent V-6 Engineand has alreadywon, many awards.2006 is the only year the 3.9Lis availiable ina Monte Carlo.

But it's the top-of-the-line Monte Carlo SS, with a starting price of $26,990, that's noteworthy, thanks to the new, 5.3-liter engine.

In the test Monte Carlo SS, I learned quickly about the newfound power. Ignoring the throaty V-8 sounds that emanated after the engine turned on, I innocently pressed the accelerator a bit too aggressively when a stoplight turned green. I pulled away like some race-inspired terror. I moderated that gas pedal from then on.

Monte Carlos were some of Chevrolet's most popular cars in the past, setting a model year sales record of

2007 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO

2007 CHEVROLET MONTE CARLO IS A WINNING CHOICE
ON AND OFF THE TRACK
The 2007 Chevy Monte Carlo adds sizzle to the mid-car segment with premium-quality features, racing-inspired styling, powerful yet fuel-efficient engines and thoughtful attention to detail. For 2007, Monte Carlo builds on the new look and revised suspension it received for 2006 for a vehicle that looks as good as it drives.
Monte Carlo draws on a rich NASCAR stock car racing legacy – the most successful nameplate in the sport’s history – to offer one of the industry’s only true midsize personal coupes. The vehicle has remained true to the roots of style and performance established at its introduction in 1970.
Both the LS and LT models use the 3.5L V-6 engine. The 3.5L V-6 uses variable valve timing and variable intake technology to help deliver 211 horsepower (157 kW) and 214 lb.-ft. (290 Nm) of torque . The muscular Monte Carlo SS, equipped with a 5.3L small-block V-8, produces 303 horsepower (226 kW) and 323 lb.-ft. (438 Nm) of torque.

All engines are matched to the Hydra-Matic 4T65 four-speed automatic transmission. This smooth-shifting transmission is renowned for its durability and strength with high-torque engines. The version mated with the 5.3L V-8 is enhanced to match the engine’s increased torque output.
For 2007, the Monte Carlo is available in the LS, LT and SS configurations. The LT model has been re-contented to include new standard and available equipment, and the LTZ model has been discontinued.
Highlights of the 2007 Monte Carlo include: [ul][*]Standard 5.3L small-block V-8 with Active Fuel Management technology in SS model [*]FlexFuel badge on E85-capable 3.5L 3500 V-6 models [*]Available Rally Stripe package for Monte Carlo SS [*]Hydra-Matic 4T65 four-speed automatic transmission mated to all engines; enhanced version used with 5.3L V-8 [*]Bold exterior styling [*]Retuned suspensions with wider front track [*]Family of 16-, 17- and 18-inch wheels and tires [*]ABS and traction control [*][b]Interior featuring high-quality attention to detail, including improved seat upholstery stitching, low-gloss IP components and jewel-like IP detai

New Car Review

1998 Chevrolet Monte Carlo LS
by Carey Russ

"Monte Carlo" is a grand old name in Chevrolet history. It first graced a front-engined, rear-wheel drive personal coupe from 1970 through the late 1980s. The 1970 Monte Carlo was a car for its day, with a six foot-long hood and available in SS muscle car form with a 454 cubic inch, 365 horsepower V8 engine.
The "Monte" remained popular through several redesigns in the 1970s and 1980s. It served as a basis for cars raced on the NASCAR stock car circuit during that period. But time and technology caught up with the rear-wheel drive design, and it gave way to the Lumina Coupe in 1988. When the second-generation Lumina made its debut in 1995, the Monte Carlo nameplate was applied to the coupe form.
As the original Monte Carlo was a car for its day, the 1998 Monte Carlo is a car for its day. Reflecting changes in technology and consumer tastes, the current car emphasizes value, balanced performance, and space efficiency rather than the macho attitude and straight-line performance of the muscle car era. Two models are offered - the LS and Z34. Both combine sporty styling and handling with midsized room. As it has done since its introduction, the LS uses a 3.1-liter V6 engine. New to the sportier Z34 this year is the 3800 Series II V6 also used in the Camaro. The Monte Carlo nameplate continues to grace the Chevrolets raced in NASCAR.
The 1998 Monte Carlo LS currently sitting in my driveway may not have the dragstrip acceleration of a big-block 1970 SS, but I'd wager that it gets around corners and stops better. And is certainly quieter and more comfortable in the bargain. It's a personal coupe that combines NASCAR-inspiring style, a high degree of comfort, economical operation, and the sort of good handling that makes a car enjoyable.
APPEARANCE: The Monte Carlo's sleek, aerodynamic styling looks like it was inspired by the racing version. Actually, things are the other way around. The street car was shaped to allow its near-lookalike racing namesake to work at high speeds on the NASCAR stock car racing circuit. The street version wears its performance heritage subtly. From the side, the car has a rounded wedge shape. The hood is long for a modern front-drive car, but far short of the old six feet. At the front, a small air intake is flanked by oval headlights. The LS model has chrome trim around the intake and a chromed Chevy bowtie; the Z34 is chromeless, with a red bowtie. A semi-fastback passenger cabin with a short rear quarter window and thick C-pillar echo some Monte Carlo styling cues from the past.
[b]COMFORT: Inside, the Monte Carlo LS shows its practical, comfort- oriented side. Space utilization is very good for a coupe. Materials are the synthetics expected for the price, but there are far more comfort and convenience features than one might expect. With options, my test car was around the new-car average price. But it had a more than average equipment level. Although a split-bench front seat is standard, this one had the optional cloth-covered buckets. These come with a full console that includes a cupholder and deep, covered storage box. The rear contoured bench seat h

Introduced on September 18, 1969, the Monte Carlo was only available as a four person luxury two door coupe. An American mid-size vehicle that originally designed as a personal luxury vehicle, the Chevrolet Monte Carlo was unveiled at the height of GM muscle car power era. Originally created as Chevy's answer to the new A-body Pontiac Grand Prix, Monte Carlo was the creation of Elliot M. Estes, general manager of Chevrolet and Chevrolet's chief stylist, Dave Holls. The styling of the Monte Carlo closely mimicked the more contemporary Cadillac Eldorado, though much of the body and structure were shared with the Chevelle.

Showcased alongside the Buick Riviera and the Pontiac Grand Prix, the Monte Carlo had a bit of competition in the gentlemen's performance market. The Monte Carlo shared a very short period in the limelight as a
muscle car, shortly following its introduction the vehicle fell out of favor in Detroit.

The Monte Carlo was originally intended as competition to the Ford Thunderbird for the 1970 model year, and has continued to last through six generations to date. Closely based on a contemporary mid-sized sedan, all Monte Carlos have remained as two-door coupes. From the beginning, the Monte Carlo has been one of GM's largest successes on the NASCAR stock car racing circuit.

Fitted with the longest ever hood on a
Chevrolet[b], the Monte Carlo rode on a 116 inch wheelbase, and was based on the A-body Chevelle platform with 6 footer hood. Though any Chevelle engine was available, all Monte Carlos came standard with at least a 350 cubic inch V8 engine. To create a more muscular appearance, bulges were added to the fenders. Except for the fake wood trim, the Monte Carlo shared basically the same dashboard as the Chevelle. The base price was $3,123, and cost more $218 more than the Chevelle Malibu.

A fully equipped Monte Carlo cost more than $5,000 with all of the various options. These options included three-speed manual being replaced by two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, or four-speed manual, though most Monte Carlo's carried the Turbo-Hydramatic. Other available options included Four Season Air Conditioning, power seats, Variable-Ratio Power Steering, power windows, Strato bucket seats, full instrumentation, Rallye wheels and much more.

The Monte Carlo SS 454 package was the most sporting option and received an updated blacked-out rear body panel in 1971. The new package also included front and rear stabilizer bars and dash control knows with international symbols and heavy-duty front and rear suspension. A variety of models came with new rubber rear bumper inserts. The LS-5 454 was rated at 365 bhp, which was an increase of 5 bhp, desp

2005 Tony Stewart Signature SeriesINDIANAPOLIS - Chevrolet will pay tribute to one of NASCAR's recent champions with the introduction of the 2005 Tony Stewart Signature Series Monte Carlo. The limited edition vehicle is the 10th NASCAR-inspired Monte Carlo that Chevrolet has created over the last five years.

"We are delighted to announce the latest edition to the Signature Series Monte Carlo line as an on-going effort to recognize NASCAR and Chevy's past and present driving stars," said Jim Campbell, director of car marketing for Chevrolet. "The Tony Stewart Signature Series Monte Carlo is a perfect way to honor Tony's success on and off the race track."

The Tony Stewart Signature Series will be a black supercharged Monte Carlo built with many elements of Stewart's No. 20 Home Depot Chevrolet subtly incorporated into the vehicle.

The exterior of the vehicle is modeled closely after Stewart's night race paint scheme with an all black body complimented by Stewart's signature displayed on the sail panel and No. 20 graphics and Home Depot orange accents prominently lining the bottom trim of the vehicle. A Joe Gibbs Racing signature badge is also displayed on the rear decklid. The attention to custom detailing is also prevalent within the interior of the Monte Carlo with Stewart's signature embroidered on the head restraints, displayed on the door sill plates and positioned within the gauge cluster. The gauge cluster also contains orange-outlined white numerals in the same typeface as exterior graphics and Stewart's signature while both front seats are accented with orange French seams.

Beyond a unique design concept, the Monte Carlo maintains its powerful supercharged 3800 V6 engine, delivering 240 horsepower and 280 lb.-ft of torque. Other features include a heavy-duty four speed automatic transmission, sport front bucket seats with Ebony leather seating surfaces, a racing-inspired grill and 17-inch black-accented diamond-cut cast aluminum wheels.

A total of 1,020 units of the Tony Stewart Signature Series Monte Carlo will be available later this year. Pricing has not yet been announced.

"I am honored to be recognized as a part of an elite group of Chevrolet drivers and NASCAR champions," said Tony Stewart. "The Signature Series Monte Carlo is a unique way to promote the sport of NASCAR while also raising money for many important charities through The Tony Stewart Foundation."

Chevrolet will make a donation from the sale of the Tony Stewart Signature Series Monte Carlo to The Tony Stewart Foundation, a private, non-profit corporation which focuses on raising and donating funds to help care for chronically ill children, drivers injured in motorsport activities and to help other charitable organizations.

The Tony Stewart Signature Series Monte Carlo is the 10th NASCAR-themed vehicle Chevrolet has produced over the last five years. Five Signature Series Monte Carlos and five Pace Car replicas have been offered as a unique way for racing fans to connect with their favorite Chevy race cars and drivers.

Wow Space, that is a lot of information.

First I ever heard a 4-speed manual transmission could purchased in a 3rd gen Monte from the factory. A 3-speed manual transmission I knew about but not the 4-speed.

Wonder if any were built with a 4-speed?
