Default Rate this Turbo Setup for 04 SS Non SC

Ok so I took some advice from you guys and talked it over with my brother-in-law. I think I will be going the Turbo route as oppossed to the Super Charger. So here is a running list of things I need to accomplish this and of course a few questions at the end.

Cartuning Performance 3800 Turbo Kit.
Turbo Kit Link
$3100

Cartuning Performance Air-to-Air Intercooler Kit
Intercooler Link
$1100

4T65E (HD) Transmission
Trans Link
$1900

Random Technology 3" Downpipe/Hi-Flow Cat
Cat Link
$335

Questions for the Monte Guru's
0- I chose to quote a HD transmission. Is there a cheaper route that I can go with or will I snap my transmission with any other option.

1- Should I get the Upgrade to PT-61 Precision Turbo(Turbo) or the Turbonetics Manual Boost Controller(Intercooler)? Whats your opinion? What are my gains?

2- What programmer should I get? I believe I need one to unlock the capabilities of these enhancements. My brother-in-law has an 02 Corvette z06, so if there is a programmer that will work with both my 04 SS non SC and his that would be best.

3- How much HP and Torque can I expect from this type of setup. Keep in mind I'm currently running at the stock 200HP.

4- If you think that I can get a better setup for the money, or if I left something vital out please let me know. Please leave me links if you suggest something so I can see exaclty the product your talking about.

Thanks so much guys
-Will

I believe the 3" downpipe is a waste of money. The kit comes with a custom-made 2.5" downpipe with the "U-Bend" removal. This should be sufficient for your set-up.

The system also comes with a reprogrammed PCM. Why waste money on the tuner? Have your brother spend money on possibly a Hypertech III.

As for the PT-61 upgrade, are you planning a lot of performance upgrades later? If not, it's not worth the money. If you do decide to go with the PT-61, you should get the boost control.

Lastly, for suggestions on what you missed...Are you looking for straight-line performance? Don't care about some lost fuel economy? Here is a suggestion...A gear set while you have the trans being replaced...

How much horsepower are you expecting to get out of this modification?

Have you considered taking the $6K and using it for a down payment on an '06 SS? 303 hp out of the box.

I'm not trying to be an a$$, just interested in what you goals and expectations are. If it's to have some fun, and build something that is unique then it sounds pretty cool!

I do want a ton of raw power and have something unique. I'm hoping to get 350+ HP and a ton of torque out of this car. I will have this car paid off within a months time and don't want to get the 06 SS and have payments again. I heard that the new v8 really doesn't perform that well compared to the 5.7 that was in camaro and trans ams. From the review in car and driver or one of those other mags i heard that it's not that much of a performance increase from the 3.8 SC from previous years. Please don't roast me for that comment. That is purely what I read. Besides the 3.8 has so much performance potential with aftermarket upgrades. Is there any upgrades for that new v8 yet? I really want to have fun with this project and have something that is unique and different. Plus, even though the body style is very similar I like my 04 better then the new 06. Mine is black with tinted windows and black interior. Really sharp looking(when it's clean.)

I'll take your word blue02SS that the programmer and downpipe that come with this thing should be sufficient. Didn't know what I could expect with the kits offerings. What type of gateway upgrades can I expect with the PT-61 upgrade. As I said earlier. I intend on getting the HD transmission.

Is there anything I should do with the engine internals before I throught he turbo on there.

I was thinking of getting the hood scoop with the functional cold air induction kit. Any thoughts on doing this.

You have some good reasons, that are important to you... sounds like fun!

I don't think it is fair to compare the Monte's performance to the 5.7 camaro/trans am since it's FWD vs. RWD. I have an '06 SS and really feel that the performance limiter on the car is the FWD. I run out of traction long before I run out of power. But of course.... as soon as some aftermarket upgrades are available for the 5.3, I will be trying them out!

My SS is black on black with tinted windows too.... and it looks really sharp .... well, except for the 'yellow' bowties. As soon as I find chrome or billet replacements, they will be gone.

I have talked with Mike Kopstain (owner of the W-Body Store web site via email a couple of times in reference to this set-up. Mike has been modding cars for a long time. I have kept up with his efforts since he only worked on SHO's (The W-Body Store is owned by the Midwest SHO Company). I have told that unless you plan to do lots of internals, the normal system will suffice. Mike even has "turn-key" race cars available for $7500 (no, they are not M/C's, they are Pontiacs). Mike is running the PT61 because he has done the full-race route on his cars. We are talking pistons, cam, 1.9's, ported/polished heads, etc. Getting down toward the 10's with this set-up. I would possibly think about the aftermarket MAF sensor, 1.9's, and the Comp Cams setup (of course, I also want the HD trans with low gears). I am into the straight line performance. I love shocking the unsuspecting victim. I am waiting until the warranty is gone before I do anything. But that set-up is what I am going to go with. But this is just me. It really comes down to what YOU want out of the car. Are you looking for 350hp at the wheels or crank? If at the crank, the regular setup from cartuning (non-T61) will provide what you want.
