Default Overdrive?

I'n my Moms 98 Monte Carlo I noticed it had option of O around the D as a drive option. With a little Imagination I presumed it was the abbreviated term "OverDrive" Now that I am looking for one of my own, I wonder. What does it Specifically Do? I've only seen that option on Monte Carlos'.

Are you saying you only see the "O/D" on Monte Carlo's? I'm kinda confused by yer post, mine goes "1, 2, D, O/D"

Thanks that clarifies it a little.

But yes, I've never seen the O/D function on any other car besides the Monte Model.

Overdrive forces the car to shift into the highest gear possible as early as possible to keep the RPMs low and keep your gas mileage high.

Most automatics now days have O/D doesnt matter whether they are 4 speed or 6 speeds, the highest gear is usually always O/D in new cars...

Some cars like my Monte for example may not call it O/D on the gear selector, but it still is. Mine says D, 3, 2, 1...In my case D is O/D.
