Default '06 Monte Carlo Tach is strange in OverDrive

At times driving between 35-40 mph in overdrive the tach will bounce up and down 2-300 rpms (1200-1500 rpms) but not all the time. The engine speed does not seem to be surging. It is a 3500 engine with 14K miles. The tach is steady at 60 mph at 1500 rpms.

My parents 2007 Impala does not do this and on a business trip recently I drove an '09 Impala that did not do this.

All cars have the 3500 engine. Is this normal? The dealer looked at it once and saw nothing, but that (the selling) dealer has closed and my warranty will be up soon in July.

Thanks in advance.

Arrow Hope this Helps

Hi `Eric,
My SpaceSearch revealed the below information.
Since you are still under warranty, I would
take your Monte back 2 the dealership
and have them hook `up their diagnosis Machine,
and have them reflash your BCM.

Read the below infor/ I hope it helps
Good Luck from `Space

2006-2007 Chevy Monte Carlo

The following diagnosis might be helpful if the vehicle exhibits the symptom(s) described in this PI.
Condition/Concern:

• Speedometer and tachometer freeze while driving
or changes RPM erratic behavior

Along with these complaints DTC U0140 00 and/or U0073 71 may be stored as a history code in any GMLAN High Speed module.
If the data circuits (2500 & 2501) have experienced an "intermittent" short to ground or short to each other "2 times" within a period of less than 1 second and then go back to normal, the BCM may appear to be "off-line" on the high speed buss. This intermittent scenario should not cause other modules to lose communication, only the BCM. If this situation happens, the BCM will not start communicating with other modules again until the key is out of the ignition and the BCM has timed out (approximately 20 minutes).
Typically the customers complaint will be intermittent and usually occur when driving over bumps/rough roads.
Recommendation/Instructions:

If DTC U0140 00 or U0073 71 is set only as a HISTORY code in any of the high speed modules, refer to "Testing for Electrical Intermittents" in the service manual to reset the DTC and diagnose the location of the fault.
Please follow this diagnostic or repair process thoroughly and complete each step. If the condition exhibited is resolved without completing every step, the remaining steps do not need to be performed.

When was the last time you had a tune-up?

Plugs, wires, air filter?

IDK if your car is the same as mine, but I know around 40-45 the tranny doesn't know what to do, it could just be wanting to shift again.

Thanks Space! I plan on taking the car in before the warranty is up for the ISS noise and I will mention this issue to this dealer as the original selling one has gone under.

The car has 15K so no need for a tuneup yet...

mileage shouldn't be your guide to getting something done on the car.

a dirty air filter is a dirty air filter, no matter what your odometer says.

I go by mileage... I change the air filters at 12,000 miles and they look like brand new. I just change them because it such a hassle to get them out and out at them.

With my old car I had the dealer replace the spark plugs at 4 years and the car had 38,000 miles on the plugs. I had them replace them because of the age and not the mileage. The car came back with a severe engine miss. I told them originally to take their time and keep the car overnight. They admitted they changed the plugs with the car hot and cross-threaded two plugs in the aluminum head (3.1). And this was the service dept. of the selling dealer. I have never gone back to them for service nor have they sold me a car.

Evern with oil changes I go by mileage. It works for me.

Dealer found a service update for the IPC and reprogrammed the IPC with updated calibration but this did not change the condition with the tach.

I had that same problem with my 06 with the 3500 and I got a transmission flush and it has'nt done that since. It seemed like the transmission wanted to shift but did'nt. So i got it flushed and now it works great except it shifts hard every once in a while. Which im working on, this problem has recentley appeared almost a year after the trans flush.
