Oil additive to help with cold starts?
Just wanted to know do anyone here use some type of an additive to help with the cold starts in the morning? I'm currently using 5-30 mobil 1 oil next oil change due soon wanted to help my motor have a more relaxed starts in the mornings.
Heres a cpl suggestions...
1st...
If its kept outdoors during the winter.
Have you considered/heard of using a heated Dip stick?
2nd...
If its kept outdoors for the winter..
I'm sure you have a trouble light... leave it on under the hood at night helps to keep the block and oil etc warm...enough for easy starts..
3rd...
I have used Lucas high mileage motor treatment that also aids in easier start ups during those cold winter nights despite you using Mobil one..
4th...
If its kept outdoors..
Place a sheet of card board in front of the radiator.. (keeps the wind out of the motor compartment. (Don't drive with it in place other wise it may cause overheating) If your heat doesn't get/stay hot enough take and cover the lower 1/3 to half of the radiator that will help hold the heat in to keep you warm and for your defrosters to work properly.
I hope you find these tips useful...
As you know..In Michigan it gets bitter cold this has saved my butt more than once!
Lastly...
Besure all your belts are tight and that your antifreeze mix is correct also besure your battery is fully charged and under 3yrs old.. and that your alternator is producing generally around 13 1/2 to 14 volts to insure proper/quick starts.
As the cold will drain/ tax your charging system..
Hope this all helps

all good tips and good advice.
My Monte came with a block heater. The electrical cord is coiled up in the original wrapping, never used it.
It has always started in the cold. I remember -25 Celsius a few times. I was in Winnipeg once at -35 and I almost plugged it in, all the hotels have hook ups. But it was too cold to open the hood. It started fine with the remote start.
I thought the reason the use 5-30 was for easier start ups?

as it warms up it also gaines in viscosity thus protecting the motor even more.
