I own a 1978 Monte Carlo, with the column shift and the wiper controls are on the turn signal lever

that needs the complete steering column replaced, My question for you is, I was at the wrecking yard and they have a complete column from a 1979 cutlass that would match my monte perfect, the issue I am having is, when I spoke to the guy at the yard he said that only 78's ie:monte,cutlass,malibu, and a few others are interchangable, and are not interchangable with the 79-or 80's ,

Can you tell me if this is true because i would love to get that column for my monte

 

I thought the guys over on the Monte SS board say the 78-80s are the same? And they'll even swap over into the 81-88 cars as well on some parts?

When I was looking for a dash for my girlfriend's '81 Monte the salvage yard had no idea if the '80 Malibu Wagon dash would fit her car? So I bought the dash for $20 and gee, it did fit. Just like the stock but damaged dash in her car. I did the swap 10 years ago. The dash is still in her Monte and looks great.
