Unhappy need help with a 3.1L

alright i now it seems kind of stupid, but i have a 3.1L is there anything i can do to get any extra power out of that motor. something that will work, not the joke of a resistor that you put im the MAF. no bull**** like that but something that will work. i have a 5th gen and i'd really like to put a 3.8L with a supercharger in but its a little out of my price range. so please annyone got any good ideas?

He doesn't have the 3800.

I would honestly just save up if you wanted power. You can throw some money away, but it will still be slow.

If you think you can do an engine swap, I would save for that. Or I would just enjoy this car as much as you can, and then just save as much as you can, sell the car and buy something with the power that you want already.

Yeah, you're better off saving your money. You wont get that much out of the 3100. And once you do get done the very little you can do to those engines, you're gonna be pissed when you want more power and you spent all your money on trying to mod out a 3100. But if you're just looking to stand out in the 3100 world, there are for sure some thigns you can do like said above. Tuned PCM, Intake, some custom exhaust work. But after all that, you're looking at MAYBE a 30HP gain and thats with REAL custom exhaist work, not just throwing some glassys on or somthing.
For real, you're better off saving your money for a L67 swap, then modding the sht out of that. Good luck though.

L67s have gotten cheaper over the past few years. Your best bet would be to find a totalled car with one in it. The engine will fit but headers are a pain to install into a 5th gen. You should be able to buy a car that's totalled for under $1k no problem.

A top swap can mean a couple of different things depending on what engine we're talking about. In your case, a 3100 with a top swap is a 3100 with a 3400's heads, LIM and UIM.

If you have a 3800, a top swap means that you swapped the heads on up with an L67 in order to be supercharged. The benefit with this is that you get higher compression than you would with just a plain L67.

If you honestly just save your money, find a 3800 wiring harness out of a 1998/1999 Monte Z34 / 3800 powered Lumina LTZ, the swap can be done. You can get an L36/L67 for not that much money these days. Most importantly though, just read about the swap as much as you can and get very familiar with it.

It's been done a few times, and it will fit (because the Z34 came with it)
