Monte went for a swim today, literally!!!
Ok I don't know if anyone heard of the sever rain and flooding that just took effect today in the Chicago area but I was on my way to work when I drove through a street that was under 3ft of water, the Monte stalled in the middle of the street and stayed there for nearly 3 hours till it suddenly managed to start up for me to gun it full force out of the street to some high ground. Water was up to my side mirrors just 2 inches before the windows. It did pull through for about 500 yards tat when I made it to my work parking lot, right away I started dismantling the engine and I pulled the heads and the LIM out and dropped the oil pan and vacuumed all the water out of the cylinders and put new oil and gaskets on the car. I got it to start and its been running straight for 6 hours now and so far nothing has happened. Half of the lights and some sensors have shorted out but I got all that figured out and fixed now. I'm amazed no water made it into the cabin and now I'm not sure what else to do to my beloved Monte, it's idling perfectly fine at 800rpm and all the remaining water has been forced out of the mufflers. I got no pressure on my brakes and dunno should I bleed them or will they regain pressure? Well that's my day for u guys how was urs?

When I read you tried to drive through 3ft of water, I'm thinking "this is not the old 'Oregon Trail' game where you try to get the wagon to cross the river" lol.
I'm glad it's still running and it is quite a surprise the entire inside was not submerged.
As for the brakes, they are vacuum assisted. My guess is a vac leak OR clogged vac line. That's the first thing I'd start with.

Well after what your Monte and you just went through I believe this qualifies you as todays damn luckiest Monte owner. Your ahead of the game in that you even got it started, and that your knowledgeable enough to be able to save your engine like you did. Hope your car does well in the coming weeks. And don't drive through any more water unless you have the right car...

Yikes ... wondered if anyone from here was a victim of today's floods. Sorry to see that you were one of them.
I take it you didn't have any water IN the cabin of the car? My 2000 got flooded in May 2003 ... water was halfway up the doors & up to the dashboard inside the car. It got totaled.

Sorry to hear that about your monte, Good thing you got it back up an running again. I'm from chicago too. Which flood were you in the south flood or the north flood. I didnt encounter 3 feet of water but I had to drive on the median to avoid driving in 1 feet of water on the southside.
