It is used mostly for insurance purposes. My uncle is an insurance agent. He tried to scare me when I first started driving by telling me that he could track every move I was making in my mom's new car. WELL, fast forward a decade: in January, I got pulled over in my 06SS on Alligator Alley and the cop said he clocked me at 96 when I had my cruise control set between 75 and 80. The first person I called was my uncle, because I wanted to use the box as evidence showing that I WAS NOT going 96. Thats when he explained to me that it has extremely low amounts of memory and stored data (the 5 seconds) and that the information cannot be tracked beyond that 5 seconds. Insurance companies and accident investigators use this information to determine cause and fault in accidents, otherwise, the information is completely useless. Unless a cop stops me within 5 seconds of any illegal activity (speeding, running reds, etc.) there is no evidence to prove it, it has already been rewritten. Needless to say, I couldnt prove that I wasnt speeding, and paid the $280 fine.
