Hi I am 18 and am just about ready to purchase my first car I have been looking at a lot of 4th gen Monte Carlos. I dont know much about cars in general and not really sure what to look for when purchasing an older car, whats and good deal, and what the work is going to cost. I have found an SS near me (MA) on craigslist listed for 1600 but he said he would take 1200. I have a picture its an 1985 with a 305 v8 in it, hows it look? 1985 Monte carlo SS`

Hi New `Guy,
The best advice I can give you is to find a friend/relative/associate that knows about cars & ask them for help in your pursuit to find a good ride.

I love 85 Monte's, but any ride that age can have massive problems `if they are not checked `out...I don't think you need a money pit.

Wish you good luck, and keep us updated...Oh, never be afraid to ask questions ?'s It's always better to find out problems b-4 you buy ~> then after..4-$ure

Since you are so young, and unexperienced with cars. I would recommend a different first car.

An older car like this is going to require a LOT of routine maintenance done. If you don't know your way around a car, taking these problems to mechanics is going to cost an arm and a leg. The MPGs are also terrible, and the price of gas is high.

You are probably better off getting a more modern car that is known to be reliable and slowly learning about cars.
