Default Need help first car.. Questions 87 ls 45k miles

Hey everyone thank you for taking your time to read and maybe help me...

So basically i had a friend who rebuilt a 87 monte carlo ss and when i seen it i fell in love with it and i wanted one..

1 month ago i got my permit.. And guess what i found a 87 monte carlo ls with 45k miles 2 owners and every oil change/maintance paper...

So basically i just want to boost this thing up..
V8 5.0 liter 305 engine in it...

I dont know much but i do know i want to make this thing like brand new.. The engine.. I want the most horsepower i can get but Nicest idle i can get to.. I want it to make people smile... Lol... k.

So what can i buy to make this car last...

Depends on what you want to do with it. Keep the original 305 and build it up, or go bigger like a 350?

I'd personally go with a larger motor. But yours does only have 45k miles, which is great for its age.

Default Building up the 305

My son has an 87 SS Aero and he is the 3rd owner. For the most part it is stock with a 10 year old paint job and magnaflow system from the cats back. The poor girl has set for the last few years as his life dictated a family car as he now has a family. For Christmas my gift to him is to get her back on the road. He had a set of headers and wanted to fix the issues with leaking manifolds. I was told that I could put on a system to have Y pipes before the mufflers to go to baloney cuts before the tires with a clamp cap system for when you do ot ant it so loud. The biggest question is the 305 was always a little on the lame side but with a car that is truly stock how far do you go? I was hoping to possibly change the carberation and give this thing some more punch. Maybe get rid of any of the emmissions and get her breathing right. But I am unfamiliar with the computer and what is needed....Any thoughts?
Thanks
John

It all depends on the depth of the pockets. A 305 is pretty lame by todays standards. There are some GOOD crate engines out there. Personally, I would like a 383 stroker built from a 4 bolt 350 block, but then again, how deep are your pockets? Then you start talking bigger radiator, beefy transmission, etc, etc, etc.

I agree an engine change would do it but it is all factory stock in decent condition so how far do you go. Would be easier to buy the power in another car but this thing has some real looks to it. I was hoping to possibly install a new Edelbrock carb/ manifold combination to punch it up a little and give the headers a little more behind them. The EGR is already out and we planned on stripping anything that might strip any power.
