Default EGR Valve Replacement Question

Hello Forum, I'm a just-signed-up user. I have a 2000 Monte Carlo SS in Silver. It's currently got +233,000 miles on the clock. Been a great car to me!

I'm currently getting an engine code (0404 and 1404) thrown indicating problems with the EGR valve. I did some searching online and found that apparently some EGR valves are able to be cleaned and placed back on the car, with many more miles of service without putting a new one on.

SO...I removed mine, cleaned the mating surfaces, sprayed it down good with carb/choke cleaner and put it back, with a new gasket.

My question--the old one didn't really seem to be of the 'cleanable' type. It seems like a closed system that doesn't lend itself to cleaning. I had cleared the engine code, am now getting it again after about 50 miles of driving. I guess I'll put a new one on, but wanted to check in here on opinions of what else to check and whether I wasted my time trying to clean the old one.

Thanks in advance for any insight!

You probably did waste your time cleaning it, these EGRs suck.

Replace it and enjoy your Monte Carlo.
