Anyone ever noticed a difference in BRAND of Fuel?
I also have heard of stuff like that...
There is a company in my area called Sheetz, and they are notorious in the area for having crap gas, even though they are the biggest seller of it (mainly because they sell the world famous Made To Order stuff (mto)...
I know this sounds weird, but many older mechanics will tell you that you can tell the quality by the smell.. if you are filling up, and don't smell much, it's because they gas is higher quality... Weird, but maybe true?? lol

i haven't heard anything good or bad about their fuel.. i know their tankers stand out becasue they have chrome wheels on the truck and trailer, and they actually keep them polished... and the ones here are very well maintianed. i figure they must keep pretty good quality fuel (although I never use it) becasue evertyhing else they keep is pretty well maintained... i fgured their fuel would be good too... but o'well. and here they are like 6-7 cents a gallon cheaper.
Ok, little story for you.
I don't know if the whole Additive thing includes diesels, but here goes:
In the summer of 99, before I was a Senior in HS, I participated in this Western Trip where a bunch of Sophmores/Juniors went out west to explore places like Mount Rushmore and all that.
Unluckily enough the vehicles we were "lucky" enough to loan from the schools (wasn't a school trip, just put on by teachers) happened to be like 4 big diesel suburbans. Well, the had been run on amoco diesel almost all the time because that happened to be the fuel card the school used. We also got one of them for the trip. Well as often as we could we would buy Amoco (now it's BP) fuel. Their stations tended to be nicer, and when running on their fuel the diesels got better mileage, and generally ran better.
Well as we started running into more mountains it seemed the Amoco/BP stations got to be fewer and fewer, and we started having to fuel at different places.... Conoco seemed more likely to have diesel than the others... so when there wasn't an Amoco it was Conoco.
Well, the surburbans ran like CRUD on the Conoco fuel... they would smoke a whole lot more, they got worse mileage, it was really hard to start them, and, when trying to shut down the vehicles they would do what is called "dieseling" convenientantly enough, where even when you tried to shut down the engine, it would keep putz-plop-plutzing at a very low RPM.
This sold me on Amoco fuels, and I've been runnin them ever since, whenever possible.. I'm one of those "crazy" people that would rather nearly run out of fuel looking for an Amoco, then buy anywhere else. Even if there's a 20 cent a gallon difference (yes, I have done that before [
])
When "FORCED" to put in a few gallons of other brands in my car, I haven't noticed much of a difference, yet you can imagine a unleaded gasEFI vehicle has a lot more control over timing and such to compensate for bad fuel and the like.
Because the 3.9 is stroked, not just bored over the 3.5 motors I also run premium high octane (91 or 92, whatever I can find). I do feel a very slight bump in HP over lower grade fuels, and a very slight bump in mileage. Maybe 1.5 on the highway and .5 mixed. I feel that because the motor has a longer stroke, versus simply a larger bore, that the setup of the engine can absorb the longer power pulse, because of the slower burn rate of higher octane fuel. Granted I'm sure it's nothing compared to the good old Carbeurated V8's of yesteryear, but hey, it works for me!
Now, for the real question. Since there is a slight change in the Compression ratio with a stroked, versus a bored motor, do you think that putting on the heads from a 3.5 motor would (with restricting to ONLY premium fuel) give a higher compression ratio, and hence extracting more power from the engine?

Once again, it is California state law that *ALL* brands must be made identically per ARCO's patented formula.
They all pay license fees to copy ARCO's formula.
Even the smallest mom & pop, no-name gas station, has the same gas as Exxon or the others big producers.

ABSOLUTELY!!
I used to use Shell 93 exclusively, until I bought my tuner and logged some data... I had TONS of KR...
After speaking with the dyno tuners/programmers, they recommended Mobil, Exxon, Sunoco, Amoco, or BP... said to absolutely stay away from shell and cheap/no-name brands...
so, I switched over to Mobil 93 (this was about 10 months ago), and my KR disappeared dramatically!
so, now I only run Mobil 93, with the occassional mixture of some Sunoco/CAM2 100...
