Default Another thermostat question..

So am I correct in saying a 160 degree thermostat is a bad idea??

Could I cause damage by not activating the knock sensors? I heard they come on at 160*..

This is new to me, will be interesting to see what replies show up. Could ask my mechanic in about a week if no one answers this.

You definitely need some tuning done to run a 160. But really, unless you're boosted with fairly heavy mods, it's not worth the hassle. I'm somewhat sure the knock sensors pick up detonation prior to 160*. Good luck in the winter with a 160 tstat though lol.

Yea im capable of tuning something as simple as that.. Not much more yet tho.. As for the heat issue, I have a 180* in there now and the heat can become unbearable even in subzero weather. Would a 160 be that much of a difference you think??

EDIT: I honestly dont see myself going thru with this im really just trying to get info on it.. Could be a possibility if its completely safe (which I dont think it is) but that wont be till the future..

I don't think it's a good idea to run these engines too cold. You'll get more carbon build-up on the valves and in the combustion chambers. Like the others said, if you are running major boost and pumping hot air into the intake, then get the 180, but you already have that in. I would run the factory 195. I've noticed my oil stays cleaner longer with the factory t stat temp.

Yea, if youre not digging into the motor like I do almost weekly then factory 195* is better.. Def fights KR with a 180* plus the 180 tends to run you a little rich..

Never run a 160*.. Your engine will not detect knock properly until you are above 160.. Along with a couple other minor issues..

If you want to improve your cooling system, sometimes a simple change like a water pump can make a difference.

In my Monte with a 3800, I upgraded my water pump from the factory stamped steel impeller to a Series I/III cast aluminum impeller. Advantage is, better fins/flow design. I also expanded the coolant bypass on the lower intake of my 3800.

I made a similar pump swap in my '04 Grand Am that has a 3400. Replaced the stamped steel impeller for a cast aluminum/better design pump.

Admittedly, I believe the 3800 does better, but that is because I have both a pump upgrade and improved flow on the coolant bypass.

The improvements are minimal, but if you are striving to improve coolant flow and efficiency, don't rule out a simple change.

Here is a link for my 3800 and the lower intake mods:
'04 Monte Carlo SS - Port Matched LIM

Here is one showing the pump differences in the 3800 pumps:

The attached pic is the 3400 water pump differences.
