87 monte spark plugs underneath the exhaust manifold?
i was wondering if anybody knew first of all, why the spark plugs on my 87 monte carlo 5.0L 305 v8 are underneath the exhaust manifold? and two, how i can get the wires from touching the exhaust manifold because that seemed to fix the sputtering problem when i replaced the plugs and wires and one was burnt in half from the manifold....any pointers? also do they make the manifolds out of a different metal that disperses heat quicker cuz i think the ones on there are like iron and they stay very hot for quite some time after the car is off. any help is appreciated. thanks.
If the wires are too short they will be pulled too close to the manifolds. Some cheap aftermarket wires are known for this.If you get a good set of wires with adequate length, they should be able to clear everything. There should be grommets on the plug guides,so you can slide the wires to loop over the hot exhausts, and the grommets will hold the wires in that position.
I'm certain on a stock engine the plug wires are ran underneith.
When I got my '86 the plug wires were already ran over top of the valve covers so I left them like this when I installed new wires.
If you're looking for the pieces to keep the plug wires under the engine, check with Mike at Mike's Montes. He deals in 4th gen Montes. A nice guy to deal with.
