2 quarts of oil between every oil change?

I know when the oil pressure switch fails, it will seep oil out (really bad it will spray oil). If you have a 3400, look above the starter towards the driver side. On a 3100/3400 that oil switch is super cheap and easy to change (takes me 5 minutes). Also, if you are running a 3400, if you have not had the LIM gaskets changed, unusual oil loss has been a symptom I've seen before (I could tell you stories of the original 3100 TSB's I've read).
If the engine is covered in grime/oil, get a can of engine degreaser and degrease the thing, otherwise it's tough to distinguish from new or old residue.

That's way to low of mileage for you to be burning 2 quarts in between changes. You have other problems...now you need to find them.
Blah Blah...if it was a worn out engine, with high mileage...it wouldn't matter. But you are right in not doing it to a low mileage engine such as his. But truthfully, even then, it wouldn't damage anything by sticking 10-40 in a car that requires 10-30 or 5-30...You might loose a few MPG, that's about it.
I use 5W-30 in my 164K car as well, and have to add maybe .25-.5 quarts in 8K. Which is why I say, there is definitely bigger problems if it's going through 2 quarts.
Not all engines are taken care of as well as our Mike...

no! artificially raising your oil pressure is NOT a good idea lol
