Each gauge has it's own stepper motor, replace them all even if one or two is acting up.

Yes, it is the stepper motor. On my wife's 2004 Monte Carlo tach had been on and off working for a year before the temp gauge and oil pressure gauge started malfunctioning. Read the previous posts, they will tell you when one is malfunctioning, they all will eventually. I hope you don't find out that the speedometer is also, like we did. Wife got a 20 over ticket because the speedometer was malfunctioning too. Good luck.

 

The tach in my Monte went out about 2 years ago. It points to like about the 7 o'clock position. No big deal to me. Then about two months ago the fuel gauge started acting up. It would read full then drop to half then back up to full. Now it just points way up past full to about the 1 o'clock position. Is this a bad stepper motor and not a sender issue?

 

Yes, it is a bad stepper motor! My wife's Monte, tach first, then temp gauge, like you no big deal. When my wife got the speeding ticket it became a big deal. Replace all the stepper motors.

I found the guy on Ebay that sells stepper motors but I don't have an ebay account. I emailed him to see if I can purchase outside of ebay. I hope so because I don't want to spend $300-350 for a new cluster.
