I think for a ticket they will tell you since you knew about it before that you should have taken care of it before and wont help you, but that's Just what I heard.

 

It will be pretty hard to convince a judge that she didn't know she was speeding. 20+ over the limit is a "reckless operation" charge in a lot of states. Good luck.

I took wifes Monte to speedometer shop on Monday. I explained the problem, and of course they know all about it. They gave me an inspection report indicating that the speedometer was defective and could show speeds from 0-120 mph at anytime, and a written estimate for repair of $ 300. I asked if he thought the speedometer being defective is worth bringing up. He said I'm not the first one to find out the way wife did, and it was worth a try, but talk with attorney about it. I did that next day. Attorney's first question was how many tickets has wife had. She has had zero her whole life driving. He was very optimistic because of that. We decided to go to court and give it a go. He said to be straight forward and request a "deferred finding" and basically she would have to not get another ticket in 12 months, and at that time the record of ticket is expunged. I'll get back here and let you know how it works out.

 

Should the battery be disconnected when doing this? Any other advice before I start?

It doesn't have to be but if Your Not really sure what your doing then you should probably unhooking It just in case

 

So, Saturday I finally got my lazy butt out to change the steppor motors on my cluster. Hardest part was the desoldering. Everything back together and take it on a test run........everything works fine. Monday works as it should. Tuesday, not paying attention because for 2 days worked fine. Come home after work Tuesday, look down and I'm going 120 in a 35. WTF................Has anyone else had this problem after "fixing" the problem?

 

any way to test the operation of the motors while the cluster is still out?

 

A speedometer shop probably could. When I did mine, I plugged the cluster back in with the front cover off and turned key to the "on" position to check that all gauges zeroed up properly. Tach was showing 200 rpm. Turn key off and wait for needle to come to "at rest" position, and turn the needle counter clockwise to adjust for that. Then a test drive before putting dash panel back on.

 

would a bad stepper motor cause 2 gauges to act up on the same motor
