Default whining noise coming from alternator?

hey guys, have a problem. started a few days ago, only happened some of the time. now its all the time. its like the alternator (at least thats where i think its coming from) is whining, its loud. it increases as i increase speed. i originally thought it was something rubbing against a belt, but its not. then i thought it might be a tranny part giving way, but when i popped the hood, the noise was very local around the alternator. i thought it could even be from the power steering pump but it happens before i even touch the wheel. anyone have any ideas? dead alternator?

It could be the alternator, but I think more common on these cars would be the power steering pump. The power steering pump will whine even when you are not using the steering if it is bad.

Take your belt off, and start spinning everything and see if it makes a sound

I think Autozone has the power steering pump for right around $100, and its really not to difficult to do yourself.

Check the fluid first to make sure it's not just a little low.

LMAO!

And yes find the alternator, and then look straight down. Its below the alternator. Make sure the car is not hot either, or you WILL burn yourself getting to it. You have to unscrew the top, and the dipstick is on the cap. Then make sure you wipe it off, and fully screw it back on, and then remove it again to get a good reading of the fluid level.
