Default Help ? Trans ? RPMs up/ down ? "Whining noise"

Hey guys, drove my wife's 01 Monte SS for the first time in awhile, when I was on the high way doing 65 mph the rpms were at about 3100, I let off the accelerator and they dropped almost immediately to 900 (still going about 65 mph) then when I hit the accelerator you can hear a "whining sound" up n down with the movement of the accelerator pedal. Something doesn't seem right at all... The trans seems to be shifting correctly when you go from 0-65, but it seems like it's Not hitting "overdrive" or the correct gear. if You run it in 3rd gear, seems like the issue goes away.. I'm stumped... PLEASE any assistance would rock.. Thanks.. Ill try n take a small video clip of the tach while driving.... To better explain what I'm talking about..

Ps, I had it on cruise control while driving home, when the car was going down a hill at 65 mph, the tach dropped all the way down to 800 rpm..

Default Rpms at 65 ?? "Overdrive". ?? Issues ?

Hey guys, there is an issue with my wife's 01 SS. I drove it on the highway for the first time in about 6 months, when I got to 65 mph my rpms were at 3000-3100 then as soon as I let off the throttle the rpms dropped to about 700 (with in a second, stayed there until I touched the pedal again) then shot right back up... The trans seems to be shifting correctly, not hard, no slipping, it's just when I reach speeds above 60 there is this issue. (It may also be there in different driving conditions, but so far, this is the range it's acting up @! A throttle position sensor ? Shift control modular? PCM. ??, along with that, when I accelerate there seems to be a high pitched "whining"it goes away if you alo use 1-3 gears manually.. SOMETHING is wrong. Just now sure what it is.. Any help would b great.. Thanks...mjclemm

It sounds to me like you lost 4th gear/ OD...3100 RPM at 65MPH is about where you would be in 3rd gear. You may be looking at a tranny rebuild.

How many miles are on the car?

It sounds to me like the torque converter isn't locking up in OD. If you can, have the history data from the PCM read (Tech II or equivalent scanner) and look for a P0742 code. This would indicate a faulty TC solenoid which is a common cause for the problem you have.

Check the fluid. If it's low, the whining could come from that. If it's not low, fluid looks good, then you're gonna need a rebuild sooner rather than later.

There were 3 threads all about the exact same topic. I just merged them all together. Please keep this topic in this thread only moving forward. Thanks!
