Default Whinning Noise Coming From Engine

Hi everyone,

My 3.5L Monte has developed a whinning noise coming from some place under the hood. It seems to show up the most after the car has been driven for at least 15min. For example, when I get off the highway, and moderatly accelerate, a very distinct whinning noise can be heard inside the car, and it gets loader with RPM.
I opened the hood, and had someone else rev engine to 2,000-2,500 RPM, and could hear the noise right around the pully area. I listened to the alternator, and it sounded healty, and the water pump was just replaced 1 month ago. So I am left puzzled as to what is causing this noise. Any help would be great. Thanks.
Also, about a week ago, with the radio turned off, and listen carfully, I could hear a slight "clunk" noise when I shifted from park to drive, drive to reverse, and back to drive. Now that I heard it once, I always listen for it, and sure enough, its there...Could a transmission mount be bad? Again, any help would be great.

Thanks again,

I wish I had a supercharger...then I would welcome the whine...

But yeah, thats sorta what I was thinking, I guess I got to get it to make the noise, and take it in to the dealer while its making the noise so they can fix the damn thing!

They are original belts with 70,000 miles on them. But they look healthy.

The noise is for sure coming from the belt/ pully area though!

IDK personally that's a lot of mileage for a serpentine belt

Well, I just went by the dealer on my way back to work, while it was making the noise...I have an appointment Wednesday for them to look at it. But the service advisor thinks its the power steering pump! We will see...I'll keep you all updated.

As far as the clunking noise coming from the tranny when I shift from park to drive, drive to reverse, etc. The service guy seems to think its perfectly fine, and nothing to worry about....I don't know about that, I asked why it just started doing it, and never has before...he didnt have an answer for me...hum what to do?

Hi Everyone,

Just wanted to give you all an update on the whinning problem......

So far, it's fixed, the dealer installed a new power steering pump...So I got my fingers crossed that I don't start hearing the damn noise again...(since it has always been an on/ off type of noise)
